It’s not a recent thing but I’ve seen this exact patent with a PSA/patent drawings some years ago. Viewers weren’t allowed to continue watching their show until they yelled out the company’s name.
Not that I am defending anything Sony has been doing lately, but since it was never used, I am assuming this was one of those cases where a company patented something just so they have it and nobody else can use it, happens a lot. I don’t think they seriously intended to use it since the backlash would be huge and instant.

No, Microsoft’s patent is similar but recent, Sony patented that McDonalds thing years ago.
